From the parking lot to Pennsylvania Avenue

Picture this. It’s June 1993, and in the shadow of RFK Stadium, a BBQ revolution is firing up. Smoky brisket, tender ribs, and chicken sizzling over open flames create a feast for the senses. Teams like the US Postal Service’s “Hog Wild Postal Burners” showcase their pitmaster prowess, while the RNC and DNC teams duke it out over the best ‘cue in town. Even activist and grill master Bobby Seale adds his flavor to the event, sharing stories and recipes from his cookbook Barbecue’n with Bobby. But this gathering was about more than BBQ—it was a celebration of community, music, and the simple joys of summer.

Fast forward to 2025, and the spirit of that first battle is alive and thriving. Now in its 33rd year, the Giant National Capital BBQ Battle has grown into a cornerstone of American summer, earning its place as the nation’s premier food and music festival. Thanks to title sponsor Giant Food and an amazing lineup of partners, Pennsylvania and Constitution Avenues come alive with the irresistible aromas of BBQ, the pulse of live music, and the laughter of families and friends. Over the years, this iconic event has united our community while raising millions for local charities.
